Additionally, we are the industry’s leading TRACS product users and are the largest users of RailSys™ modelling software outside of Network Rail.

Senior Consultant – Operational Modelling

As a Senior Consultant, the individual will be expected to manage and contribute to projects undertaken by the Consultancy team through the development and application of railway operations knowledge and experience. They will be required to prepare cost estimates and comprehensive proposals for future work. They will also be required on occasion to direct projects and potentially line manage some of our more junior staff.

As alluded to for this role we are looking for someone to be multi-discipline, being able to cover a number of disciplines within the operational modelling arena. This would include taking responsibility as a technical lead on specific projects in relation to different disciplines. There would also be a requirement to specify the work, engage with the technical detail of the work itself and oversee the outputs of other consultants (including a thorough approach to Quality Assurance).

Main Responsibilities

  • Successfully leading small-medium sized consultancy projects, to deliver quality outputs on time and in budget
  • Be a technical expert in four or more of the systems used by the consultancy
  • Be able to professionally present project findings to client bodies
  • Deliver training and mentoring more junior staff in using the Tracsis systems, including potential line management opportunities
  • Take ownership of certain client relationships
  • Actively support Principal & Managing Consultants in delivering their projects
  • Drafting and finalising project reports and briefing documents
  • Preparing estimates for inclusion in proposals
  • Checking results and outputs of other consultants
  • Communicate professionally at all levels with both employees and clients expected at this level
  • Keeping abreast of industry knowledge expected at this grade

Required Skills

  • An expert in a number of operational modelling disciplines (this being 4). This disciplines being the following:
    1. Microscopic Modelling (In tools such as RailSys)
    2. Timetable Planning
    3. Unit Diagramming
    4. Train Crew Diagram Modelling
    5. Train Crew Roster Modelling
  • Depending on knowledge within each discipline we would need you to be an expert user in 4 of the operational modelling tools used by the consultancy (for example Railsys, ATTUne, Tracs-RS, TrainTRACS & TRACSRoster)
  • Good knowledge of the Microsoft Office suite (Excel, Word, PowerPoint etc.)
  • Technical leadership
  • Technical report writing skills
  • Have excellent communication skills
  • Have a keen eye for detail and strong problem-solving skills
  • Be flexible in their approach to work
  • Demonstrate a high level understanding of project management principles and their importance in the context of deadline/budget focussed work
  • Demonstrate growing understanding of the rail industry, through personal learning and undertaking training and development opportunities as agreed with your manager.
  • Technically capable, being able to adapt to new software tools very quickly for example.
  • Having a have strategic vision in terms of operational modelling arena. Being able to translate this into technical plan where required and then back again in terms of outputs.

Ideal Skills

  • Expert in at least 5 software tools being used by the consultancy.
  • Advanced knowledge of the Microsoft Office suite (Excel, Word, PowerPoint etc.)
  • Being an expert in at 5 of the operational modelling disciplines mentioned previously

Required Experience

  • 20 years’ industry/consultancy experience
  • Qualified at degree level
